Nevis is a small volcanic island located on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea. It has beautiful beaches, a central peak covered in rain forest and clouds, a varied past. It was first illegally colonized in the early 1600s and officially recognised as a British Colony in 1628. One traveller reported that Nevis was amazingly fertile and rich, but Charlestown was a centre for sin and debauchery.
It is still rich and fertile, but the sin and debauchery have been replaced by a strong religious background. There are over 50 churches scattered around the 36 square miles representing most Christian denominations and a few non-Christian ones. Crime does occur, but compared to most other places is very low.
Nevis has no large hotels, only one with more that 40 rooms. It is small, little discovered and relatively difficult to get to, but well worth the time and effort. The food is excellent, the service generally superb, and it has a "relaxed atmosphere".
Nevis is modern with the whole island having cellular telephone service and internet access. Cable TV is available on Nevis, but be warned many places find it annoying and leave it out of the rooms. The few TVs at hotels are for group viewing, Nevis is a friendly destination.
